Introduction

As urban landscapes continue to evolve with the rise of high-rise buildings, elevators have become an essential part of modern infrastructure. With millions relying on these systems daily, ensuring passenger safety has never been more critical. This white paper delves into the evolution of safety elevators, the current market landscape, and how WebRTC technology is revolutionizing safety standards through real-time, two-way video communication.

The Evolution of Safety Elevators

The invention of the safety elevator transformed urban architecture, making skyscrapers and high-rise buildings feasible. In 1852, Elisha Otis introduced the first safety elevator, incorporating a fail-safe brake mechanism that prevented free-fall in case of a rope failure. Since then, elevators have become an indispensable part of city life, evolving from manually operated systems to highly automated units with advanced safety features.

The Rising Importance of Elevator Safety

As cities continue to expand vertically, the global demand for safety elevators is accelerating. Market research indicates that the elevator industry will reach $135 billion by 2030, driven by increased construction of high-rise structures and stricter safety regulations. In this rapidly urbanizing world, ensuring passenger safety in emergency situations is a top priority for manufacturers and regulatory bodies alike.

Rethinking Elevator Safety: The Need for Two-Way Video Communication

While traditional safety measures such as alarms and emergency stop buttons have been effective, they often fail to address real-time emergencies like medical crises or mechanical failures. Two-way video calling systems offer a game-changing solution, allowing direct communication between passengers and emergency responders. This technology closes crucial gaps in emergency response by providing live visual and audio information, enabling faster and more effective rescue operations.

Existing Emergency Response Systems in Elevators

Most modern elevators are equipped with:

Emergency intercoms for voice communication
Alarm buttons to alert building security
Automatic emergency braking systems to prevent mechanical failures

However, these traditional systems lack real-time visual data, which is essential for making quick, informed decisions in complex emergency scenarios.

WebRTC: Elevating Safety Through Real-Time Video Communication

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) introduces a breakthrough in elevator safety by enabling high-quality, low-latency video and audio calls between passengers and rescue teams. Key benefits include:

✅ Enhanced Situational Awareness – Live video feeds provide real-time insights into emergency situations.
✅ Faster Emergency Response – Rescue teams can assess incidents instantly and react accordingly.
✅ Increased Passenger Confidence – Clear visual communication reduces panic and reassures passengers.

Unlike traditional systems, WebRTC-based solutions function efficiently without relying on centralized servers, ensuring seamless performance even in challenging network environments.

Challenges in Hardware Integration

Deploying WebRTC-powered video calling in elevator systems presents unique challenges:

🔹 Limited Processing Power: Elevator control units typically run lightweight Linux-based OS with minimal CPU resources.
🔹 No Browser Environment: Many systems lack built-in web browsers required for running WebRTC applications.
🔹 Hardware Limitations: Restricted support for real-time video and audio processing, leading to potential performance bottlenecks.

Developing a Native WebRTC Solution for Elevators

To overcome these hurdles, Samvyo engineered an optimized WebRTC solution tailored for elevator hardware:

✔ Custom WebRTC Build: Compiled WebRTC libraries optimized for embedded hardware.
✔ C++ Application: Built using RTC peer connection for establishing seamless video calls.
✔ Media Capture: Developed browser-equivalent getUserMedia functionality for accessing cameras and microphones.
✔ Efficient Rendering: Leveraged GStreamer and libgtk for optimized video/audio processing.
✔ Hardware Acceleration: Utilized available GPU resources to reduce CPU load.
✔ Multithreading: Distributed workloads across multiple threads to maintain smooth, uninterrupted communication.

Beyond Elevators: Expanding WebRTC Applications

The same WebRTC-based solutions are transforming workflows across various industries:

🏭 Industry 4.0: Real-time video monitoring in manufacturing processes.
🚗 Automotive Sector: Video telematics for driver assistance and remote diagnostics.
⛏ Industrial Safety: Enhanced emergency communication in mines, oil rigs, and remote construction sites.

Case Study: Transforming Emergency Response for a Leading Elevator Manufacturer

Recently, Samvyo partnered with one of the world’s top elevator manufacturers to develop an advanced emergency response system powered by WebRTC. By following the principles outlined above, we successfully implemented a two-way video calling system that:

🔹 Operates efficiently on low-powered hardware – The solution was optimized for a 900MHz dual-core NXP i.MX6 processor, responsible for running both the elevator’s core operating system and application layer. The target was to keep CPU usage below 70% while supporting a high-quality video call alongside other elevator processes. We achieved this with a CPU utilization of just 62% while running a smooth WebRTC-powered video call.

🔹 Delivers crystal-clear video and audio – Extensive testing revealed that a 320x240 resolution at 10fps strikes the perfect balance between video clarity and CPU efficiency, ensuring optimal two-way communication while maintaining system performance.

🔹 Meets stringent safety and compliance standards – The solution underwent rigorous testing under real-world conditions to proactively identify and resolve any potential issues before deployment.

This WebRTC-powered innovation significantly improved emergency response times, enhancing passenger safety across multiple high-rise installations.
